Jesus Quotes Deuteronomy March 27, 2023

Introduction:

The book of Deuteronomy covers a lot of the Tora in the verses.

In the book of Deuteronomy, verses are quotes from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.

I will talk about Jesus making quotes from Deuteronomy around 1400 hundred years after Moses wrote Deuteronomy.

To make it a little clearer, 1400 years B.C. was when Moses was around.

Deuteronomy was the book that Jesus quoted the most. The most quoted books in the Bible are Psalms, Isaiah, then Deuteronomy.

Mouth of God

Deuteronomy 8:3 And He humbled you and allowed you to hunger, and then He fed you with manna, which you did not know, neither did your fathers know it, so that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of Jehovah man shall live.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."

  1. Moses told the Jewish people that they were to take all things literally and believe all that God said is true and must be obeyed.
  2. Jesus used the phrase, “It is written” to bring attention to God and God’s Word.
  3. The Jewish knew Moses and the history of the Jewish people. Jesus was trying to bring them back to God, to inform them that it is the word of God that nourishes them.
  4. Jesus used this phrase about God’s word to rebuke the devil and his temptation of food.
  5. Jesus was sent into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights and was hungry.
  6. Remember Jesus was on this Earth in Human Form.

Do not Tempt God

Deuteronomy 6:16 You shall not tempt Jehovah your God as you tempted in Massah.

Matthew 4:7 Jesus said to him, It is written again, "You shall not tempt the Lord your God."

  1. Moses talked about not tempting themselves with a false god.
  2. In Massah we know the story of God making water come out of a rock.
  3. They were to only serve the one true God.
  4. Jesus was still tempted by the devil.
  5. The devil uses the quote, “It is written” in verse Matthew 4:6 to influence Jesus.
  6. Jesus quoted Moses’ verse Deuteronomy 6:16 you shall not tempt Jehovah your God.
  7. Jesus was pointing out that He is the same God then and the same God now. You don’t tempt the Lord your God today either.
  8. When the devil was talking to Jesus, he was talking to God.

To receive the Holy Spirit

Deuteronomy 5:17 You shall not kill.

Deuteronomy 5:18 And you shall not commit adultery.

Deuteronomy 5:19 And you shall not steal.

Deuteronomy 5:20 And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Deuteronomy 5:21 And you shall not lust after your neighbor's wife, nor shall you covet your neighbor's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's.

Luke 18:20 You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and your mother.

  1. Deuteronomy was not so much about receiving the Holy Spirit but was about getting right with God.
  2. Jesus answered a question the Rich Young Ruler had, how to get the Holy Spirit by quoting Moses. We know the Ruler chose money rather than God.
  3. We receive the Holy Spirit from our confession and acceptance of Jesus as the Son of God and forgiveness of Sin.
  4. The Rich Younge Ruler did not want the commitment to God.
  5. He only wanted the Holy Spirit.
  6. God wrote the Ten Commandments twice for Moses, The Ten Commandments were repeated in Deuteronomy 5 to teach the people of Israel.
  7. It was written for us to realize that we too need God, and we can not buy or earn a trip to Heaven.
  8. God sees the Good on one hand and the bad on the other.
  9. With our salvation, He throws out the bad and keeps the good.
  10. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Conclusion:

These are just a few of the quotes from Deuteronomy from Jesus. It is not a coincidence that Moses listed the Ten Commandments in Exodus and reminded everyone of the Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy 5.

Jesus reminded everyone of these to make a point during his ministry on Earth.

God is telling us we should get back to the knowledge of the Bible and be able to quote the old and New Testaments.

It is evident that not only did Jesus know the Old Testament, but so did the devil.

The devil used at least once the phrase, “It is written”.

We need to be ready to quote the Bible to help us and those around us against the evil one.
